Why We Started Giving Free Seeds With Every Brown Basket Order

Karachi is a busy city. Concrete keeps increasing, roads keep expanding, and slowly, the amount of greenery around us keeps shrinking. Most of us notice it, but very few of us stop and think about what we can actually do on an individual level.

A few weeks ago, we started a small initiative at Brown Basket. With every online order, we began including free seed packets for our customers. Not because it looked good as a campaign, but because we genuinely felt that if we are taking something from nature every day, we should also try giving something back.

That simple thought became the beginning of this campaign.

Why This Campaign Matters to Us

At Brown Basket, we work closely with farms, hens, feed, soil, and natural systems every single day. Over time, it made us realize how disconnected urban life has become from nature, especially in cities like Karachi.

Many children today grow up in apartments without ever planting anything with their own hands. Even adults often want to grow plants at home but never really take the first step.

So we thought, why not make that first step easier?

Now, whenever someone places an online order with Brown Basket, we include free seeds that can be planted easily at home. A small flower pot, a balcony corner, or even a tiny space near a window is enough to begin.

Reusing Egg Packaging for Planting

Another reason behind this campaign was to encourage people to reuse packaging instead of immediately throwing it away.

Our plastic egg trays can actually work really well as small seed starters. Instead of buying separate seedling trays, customers can simply reuse the packaging they already received with their eggs.

We’ve also shared DIY videos on our YouTube and social platforms showing how to turn empty egg packaging into mini planters for home gardening.

It’s a small habit, but habits like these slowly create awareness inside homes and families.

A Fun Activity for Children and Families

One of the best parts of this campaign has been seeing how children react to it.

Kids naturally get excited when they water a plant and watch it grow day by day. It becomes more than just gardening. It teaches patience, care, responsibility, and connection with nature in a very simple way.

In a city where screen time keeps increasing, even a small hands-on activity like planting seeds can make a difference.

Our Goal Is Bigger Than Just Seeds

We know one campaign will not suddenly make Karachi green overnight. But we also believe meaningful change often starts with small actions repeated by many people.

If hundreds of homes grow even one plant, herb, or flower, it still creates impact. A greener balcony, a greener street, or even one child learning how plants grow — these things matter more than people realize.

This campaign was never only about giving free seeds. It was about encouraging a small lifestyle shift:

  • waste a little less
  • reuse what you can
  • grow something at home
  • reconnect with nature

Final Thoughts

At Brown Basket, we believe businesses should not only take from nature, but also contribute back in whatever way they can.

Maybe one small seed packet cannot change an entire city. But if enough people participate, small efforts eventually turn into something much bigger.

And honestly, the idea that an egg tray once used for breakfast can later help grow a plant feels pretty special to us.
